Inventory Clerk Job Description


Inventory clerk job position is an entry-level job position in an organization. A person as an inventory clerk is responsible to manage daily consumption of inventory and provides support to sales and purchase departments. His main duty is to coordinate incoming and outgoing process of inventory. He makes sure that all orders are properly filled and each piece of merchandise is accounted for. Inventory clerks usually perform same duties but their main duties can vary according to size, culture and nature of organization. Here is information about duties of inventory clerk and scope of career as an inventory clerk:
  • An inventory clerk will process and fill out product requisition orders from customers or colleagues.
  • Compiles and maintains records of quantity, type, value of material, equipment, merchandise, or supplies in store room.
  • Timely completion of records is main responsibility of an inventory clerk.
  • He compares inventories to office records including sales orders, production of records and purchase invoices to determine current inventory of organization.
  • He is responsible to verify physical presence of inventory with records to rectify errors and report reasons for discrepancies.
  • Report details of any damages to higher authorities.
  • He is responsible to compile reports on receiving or disbursing any material, equipment, merchandize, supplies and calculates inventory balances, costs and prices.
  • Prepares different reports such as inventory balance, price lists, disbursements or shortages etc.
  • Responsible to ensure cleanliness and proper organization of inventory in stock room.
  • He may also be asked to operate office machines like typewriter, computer, calculator etc for calculations.
  • He receives parts shipments and verifies purchase orders to ensure accuracy.
  • Sometimes provides customer services depending upon nature of business.
Requirements to Become Inventory Clerk
  • Candidate should maintain excellent work ethic. He should remain motivated to complete his assigned tasks within time and accurately.
  • Should have strong analytical skills.
  • Should have team work skills and able to work under pressure.
  • Candidate should have high school diploma or equivalent to get inventory clerk job.
  • Must have basic reading, writing and mathematical skills.
  • He should be expert in basic computer software such as MS Word, MS Excel etc.
  • He should be technically proficient to learn use of employer’s proprietary software.
